SACRAMENTO, CA — In an unprecedented accumulation of talent, four top-ranked teams met in Northern California to compete in the Gridiron Gamers Capital City Showdown on March 6, 2016. The attendance of the Bay Kings, Sac Wolfpack, Ballhawks, and G-Unit elevated the tournaments relevance on a national stage. It wasn’t just that these teams were ranked but rather that they combined accounted for a quarter of the top half of Just Score Magazines top 25 Nationally Ranked teams on one platform and as advertised they didn’t disappoint.
Tournament play kicked off the same way the MMA weekend did – with upsets. No.2 Bay Kings opened pool play 0-2 with losses to No.10 G-Unit (2015 FlagMag National Champions) and No.16 Sac Wolfpack while the No.24 Ballhawks ended with a 1-1 record. G-Unit and Sac Wolfpack landed in the top two seeds to close pool play. The Bay Kings, who ended 8th in pool play, would substantiate their No. 2 National Rankings by going on a run and knocking off the number one seeded G-Unit 24-20, which set up a semi-final matchup against the Ballhawks while Sac Wolfpack would meet their Sacramento rivals Second 2 None in the opposing semi-finals.
In what is becoming a storied rivalry in the Bay, the SacWolfpack and Bay Kings would once again square off in another instant classic. The games opening score would come on an interception return by Gini Ibe of the Bay Kings. SacWolfpack would not take long to respond with an 80-yard touchdown by Don Robinson. Two stingy defenses would keep the game scores low, causing the game to come down to the wire as a rushing the passer penalty would seal the Wolfpacks fate.
