OXFORD, MS — As we roll into week three of the college football season, most everyone expected the game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Ole Miss Rebels to be one of the early season games to keep an eye on.
And it still may be. But the early betting line is listing the Tide as a 10-point favorite to defeat the Rebels on the road in Oxford.
You only have to go back to last year though to see that Alabama was a 9-point favorite to beat Ole Miss at home and ended up on the short end of a 43-37 loss. In fact, the Rebels have won the last two contest against the Crimson Tide so is there a bit of a revenge factor?
“It’s not something I usually use as a motivating factor”, said Bama Head Coach Nick Saban. “There will be plenty of emotion for the game, I think, being an SEC game, being a division game, being a team that we’ve struggled against the last couple of years”.
Add to the fact that Saban, even though his team is 2-0, has not been overly excited about how they have played in those games.
Ole Miss lost a tough one in the opener, losing a 22-point lead and losing to Florida State. They were able to bounce back in week two with a 38-13 victory over Wofford.
This will be a big early road test for many of the young Alabama talent having played their first two games on home turf. But you can be sure Saban will have them ready for this important matchup.
With the Rebels already having a loss on their record, and with a strong Georgia team coming to town next week, this is a critical game for them to keep any hopes alive of possibly getting to the college football playoffs.
Ole Miss will need a big game from Quarterback Chad Kelly and the offense to get by the powerful Crimson Tide for a third straight season.
